Retrofit and Remanufacturing Services
Although primarily a manufacturer of high quality steering gears, Jastram is also a supplier of parts and service for steering gears produced by other manufacturers. Jastram's services include new and reconditioned parts, system repair, design and upgrades.

While Jastram services the steering of numerous companies, it claims particular expertise in the steering gear produced by the former Wagner Engineering Ltd.
Jastram Engineering Ltd. warrants that all parts sold by Jastram meet or exceed other original equipment manufacturer specifications. |

Where substituted parts are quoted in lieu of obsolete parts, Jastram warrants compatibility and interchangebility. |

Obsolete items are parts, which:
- Are no longer available from sub-suppliers (example: original Vickers hydraulic solenoid valves are not manufactured anymore and are superseded by an updated version), or
- Changed due to technical improvements. (example: original Wagner lockvalve body was made of aluminum, now it is made of cast iron)
Jastram Engineering Ltd.:
- provides complete custom design and manufacturing of steering systems;
- provides complete retro-fitting of existing systems to ring them to current standards, with new and reconditioned parts, system repair, design and upgrades;
- warrants that all parts sold meet or exceed other original equipment manufacturer specifications;

Key personnel of Jastram Engineering have substantial education and background in the field of ship engineering and ship steering systems.
Mr. Peter Doetsch, P.Eng., President is a graduate in Mechanical Engineering from Aachen, Germany. He has a background in the design and application engineering for ship components including a steering system proposal for the Canadian Navy's Patrol Frigate Program. Prior to establishing Jastram he worked 6 years for Wagner Engineering and was responsible for the design of the 'N' model cylinder and tiller series.
- Mr. Frederick K. L. Wong, P.Eng., Vice President is a graduate of Simon Fraser University in applied mathematics and a graduate of University of British Columbia in applied science (mechanical). Prior to cofounding Jastram he worked for 12 years with Wagner to the position of Engineering Manager. His major tasks included the design of the 'L' series steel cylinders and tillers and all commercial rotary vane steering gears as well as many major custom gear applications, including the hydraulic steering gear for the Canadian Patrol Frigate Program.
- Mr. Lance A. Lidstone offers diverse experiences in engineering, manufacturing and computer aided design of steering gear systems. Prior to joining Jastram he worked with Wagner for 8 years as a CAD/CAM engineer.
- Mr. Norm Howe brings 27 years of Wagner experience with him into Jastram. His scope of responsibilities included foreman of the hydraulic shop operations and international field service engineer.
Mr. W. Pfisterer has 32 years of Wagner experience in manufacturing, process control and administration. His last position was that of plant superintendent with the added responsibilities for R & D prototype manufacturing. - Mr. Frederick K. L. Jastram steering gear components are designed and manufactured in Canada according to all major classification society rules including: ABS (American Bureau of Shipping), LLOYDS, GL, DNV, BV, NKK, KRS, USCG (U.S. Coast Guard), CCG, CR, and ZC.
Jastram Press Release - ABS Type Approval
Jastram Engineering Ltd. (JEL) is pleased to announce they have received ABS Type Approval status
for their Model S hydraulic cylinders. These cylinders are specifically designed for commercial marine hydraulic steering service under the ABS Type Approval Program.
This ABS Type Approval certifies that the design of the Model S cylinders is in accordance with the ABS rules and requirements, and the quality of the products is in consistent compliance with the ABS manufacturing standards.
The Jastram Model S cylinders are most frequently installed on commercial work boats, supply vessels, large passenger vessels, megayachts, tankers, and icebreakers. They can be used in either new steering
gear system installations or in retrofit and repair programs. Jastram also offers custom design and engineering
support to customers upgrading their existing steering systems to meet the current marine safety standards.
Jastram Model S hydraulic cylinders and steering systems are designed and manufactured to meet the
standards of world's major classification societies including CCG, LRS, USCG, GL, DNV, BV, CR, ZC (CSS),
CCG, KR as well as ABS.
