Product

Jastram designs and manufactures, a whole line of marine steering gears and steering controls, including ram type gears ( Model B & Model S ABS Equipment Type Approval - B with CE certification ) and rapson slide gears ( Model K ).  A complete range of steering controls including:  independent steering control systems, electric helm, full follow-up levers, jog levers, rudder angle indicators and various steering control amplifiers - ensure that Jastram can offer complete system responsibility for any marine steering application.

Jastram produces several lines of marine hydraulic steering gears in complete ranges, as well as steering controls, power units and motor starters, ensuring overall system responsibility for all types of recreational & mega yachts, commercial vessels and offshore patrol vessels. Also, Jastram products are designed and manufactured in accordance with all major classification society rules including: ABS, BV, CE, CCG, CR, DNV, GL, KRS, LR, NKK, USCG and ZC. Their quality assurance program includes ISO 9000 objectives and a commitment to constant improvement.

Applications

Jastram specializes in custom applications, where close co-operation with the naval architect ensures that the optimal steering system is developed in each application.  In combination with our patented CCO system, Jastram can provide a proportional steering system, in which rudder movements are accelerated and decelerated, resulting in shockless and noiseless operation of the steering rams.  If power is lost to the steering gear, this system automatically reverts to emergency manual mode.

Jastram also provides steering systems with independent, not mechanically linked, twin rudder arrangements.  Modern icebreakers use an independent steering system, due to the inherently safe redundancy of two steering gears.  High speed catamarans and Swath vessels use an independent rudder system, because such arrangements save weight and allows for 'toe-in' and 'toe-out' after installation onboard.

Cost Savings

Jastram's approach to modular system components can save substantial costs for a shipyard. All shipboard wiring required to connect the various steering components (amplifier, rudder transmitter, rudder angle indicator, etc.) can be supplied by Jastram, cables pre-cut to length and with plug-in connectors installed at both cable ends. All that remains to be done by the shipyards is to run the cables and plug the connectors into the receptacles of the component. Expensive labor and set-up time are reduced to a minimum, not to mention trouble shooting. Prewired cable trees and the various steering components are shop tested and calibrated, and are ready for final installation plug-in.

Computer software

Jastram has developed a computer program, which is menu driven and allows almost instant torque calculation and gear selection upon answering some simple questions.  Naval architects and shipyards throughout the world make use of this program by simply advising the basic specifications for the steering system and receiving a full technical quotation usually within a few days.

Jastram has available an AutoCad library of all its modular components including steering gears and accessories.  This software package enables naval architects and designers to 'import' complete steering system layouts into their design at an early stage, significantly reducing drawing time and achieving accurate up to date designs at substantial cost savings.  This design software is available free of charge.

Approvals & standards certification

Jastram steering gear components are designed and manufactured in Canada according to all major classification society rules including:  ABS, CE, LLOYDS, GL, DNV, BV, NKK, KRS, USCG, CCG, CR, and ZC.  Jastram:

• is part of the ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) equipment type approval program and the European CE certification program;
• provides complete custom design and manufacturing of steering systems;
• provides complete retro-fitting of existing systems to bring them to current standards, with new and reconditioned parts, system repair, design and upgrades;
• warrants that all parts sold meet or exceed other original equipment manufacturer specifications;
• provides the fastest turn-around time in the industry!

Jastram is committed to the philosophy of quality assurance and is currently establishing the ISO 9000 QA standard. This will ensure the continuing leadership in the design and manufacturing of steering systems.

ABS Type Approval of Jastram Steering Cylinders
Jastram Engineering Ltd. is pleased to announce they have received ABS Type Approved status for their Model S and Model B hydraulic steering cylinders. These cylinders are specifically designated for commercial marine hydraulic steering service under the ABS Type Approval Program.

This ABS Type Approval certifies that the design of the Model B cylinders is in accordance with the ABS rules and requirements, and the quality of the products is in consistent compliance with ABS manufacturing standards.

Jastram Model S and Model B hydraulic cylinders are installed on all types and sizes of commercial and recreational vessels. They can be used in either new steering system applications or in retrofit and repair programs. Jastram also offers custom design and engineering support to customers upgrading their existing steering systems to meet current marine safety standards.

The Jastram range of hydraulic cylinders and steering systems is designed and manufactured to meet the standards of the world's major classification societies including BV, CCG, CR, DNV, GL, KR, LR, RINA, USCG, ZC(CSS) as well as ABS and CE.
