Jastram Engineering Ltd. provided the steering system, including steering gear, rudder stock, upper rudderstock bearings, and rudder trunk casings.
This electronic control system offers precise accurate and fully independent control of twin steering gears, with no requirement for mechanical linkage between the port and starboard rudders. Each rudder, or set of rudders, is electronically controlled by a Jastram full follow-up amplifier system. Rudders can be selected to operate in either fully synchronized mode (for traditional rudder operation) or independent mode (for modified maneuvering characteristics) or dynamic braking.
The system exceeds world wide classification requirement of single failure criteria for steering systems. Should a failure occur on one side, the redundancy feature permits the vessel to be safely controlled by the opposite steering system. [ Cited in Harbour & Shipping, Nov. 1996, pp. 31, Vancouver. The Vigilant is the first vessel built using the "Guardian Class" Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) design developed by Polar Design Associates Ltd. (Naval Architects & Marine Engineers).

... The vessel is classed by the American Bureau of Shipping as ABS+A1E+AMS, and meets or exceeds US Navy criteria, including the Ocean Service 1(a) requirement that it be able to weather the full force of tropical cyclones, this being, for design purposes to comprise a minimum assumed wind speed of 100 knots on the beam
(this design).... is economical to construct, maintain and operate yet provides a high degree of utility, safety and crew comfort on long patrols.
The vessel was built in Chile at the Talcahuano Shipyard of ASMAR - Shipbuilding and Docking Company, under the supervision of a Western Canada Marine Group (WCMG) project team. [ Cited in Harbour & Shipping, Nov. 1996, pp. 30 - 34, Van. B.C. ]
