ACCORDING TO ABS - The manufacturer builds according to ABS rules and issues a manufacturers certificate with each cylinder.
- MYTH:
- Because the certificate clearly states that the cylinder meets ABS rules, ABS will re-check with the manufacturer and then accepts the cylinder and issues its own certificate.
- FACT:
- According to ABS: This only implies that a manufacturer claims to comply with the Rules, but did he really read and meet all the relevant rules, for example:
- are the materials in accordance with the specific ABS Rules for hydraulic rudder actuator components?
- are all manufacturing procedures in compliance with the specific ABS Rules for steering cylinders?
-
ABS does NOT accept such cylinders for use onboard of ships.
INSPECTED BY ABS - The cylinder was pressure tested in the presence of an ABS Surveyor and stamped with a Report Number.
- MYTH:
- Because it has been stamped with an ABS Surveyor and Report Number, this cylinder can now be used on board ships in steering applications.
- FACT:
- Inspected by ABS: This only means an ABS inspector witnessed the hydrostatic pressure test of a particular cylinder. It does not mean that this cylinder meets ABS Rules or is acceptable to ABS for use on board of ships. In fact, an ABS inspection only proves that the cylinder did not leak or did not fail completely at a certain pressure.
-
ABS does NOT accept its own inspection certificate as proof that this cylinder can be used in a steering application.
CERTIFIED BY ABS - A complete steering system (including cylinders) was previously certified by ABS. All drawings, design calculations, piping and circuit schematic were checked by ABS and stamped "approved".
-
MYTH:
- Because ABS examined and certified a cylinder for use in a steering application on a specific project, an identical cylinder is now acceptable and can be used in similar applications (for example: in the construction of a sister ship).
-
FACT:
- The approval certificate always states the specific shipyard and hull number. The fact that an identical cylinder design was previously certified does not automatically constitute an approval by ABS for a second project. While design approval for a specific cylinder design can be extended to a 'sister vessel', all material and hydrostatic tests are still required to be performed on each individual cylinder for steering applications.
-
ABS does NOT accept previous approvals as proof that identical cylinders can be used in identical steering applications.
APPROVED BY ABS - This cylinder was 'ABS Type Approved' for use onboard of ships. The manufacturer data sheet and the certificate of compliance clearly states "approved by ABS for use on ships".
-
MYTH:
- Because the cylinder carries 'ABS Type Approval' it is all right to use this cylinder in a steering gear application.
-
FACT:
- If a manufacturer meets the very stringent Quality Control requirements of ABS, and upon approval of the design of a cylinder, ABS may issue a 'Type Approval Certificate' for this cylinder design (all Type Approved products are listed in the ABS 'List of Type Approved Equipment').
- Caution - read the ABS Rules and the manufacturers fine print
carefully.
-
Cylinders intended for use in steering applications are NOT eligible for 'ABS Type Approval', but are approved on an individual basis and are subject to material and hydrostatic test at the place of manufacturing in the presence of a surveyor. Such cylinders are individually stamped with a Report Number and the Maltese Cross and only then are 'ABS approved for steering applications'.

Jastram Press Release - ABS Type Approval
Jastram Engineering Ltd. (JEL) is pleased to announce they have received ABS Type Approval status
for their Model S hydraulic cylinders. These cylinders are specifically designed for commercial marine
hydraulic steering service under the ABS Type Approval Program.
This ABS Type Approval certifies that the design of the Model S cylinders is in accordance with the ABS
rules and requirements, and the quality of the products is in consistent compliance with the ABS manufacturing standards.
The Jastram Model S cylinders are most frequently installed on commercial work boats, supply vessels, large passenger vessels, megayachts, tankers, and icebreakers. They can be used in either new steering
gear system installations or in retrofit and repair programs. Jastram also offers custom design and engineering support to customers upgrading their existing steering systems to meet the current marine safety standards.
Jastram Model S hydraulic cylinders and steering systems are designed and manufactured to meet the
standards of world's major classification societies including CE, CCG, LRS, USCG, GL, DNV, BV, CR, ZC (CSS),
CCG, KR as well as ABS.
